Golgotha, a lonely hill outside of Jerusalem, (Heb. 13:12)
Where death, for a time, has its way. (1Cor. 15:54-57)
On the horizon stands, among many, a post,
Used for crucifixion. (John 3:14)
It is rugged in appearance,
Old weathered an implement to punish the cursed. (Gal. 3:13; Deut. 21:23)
It is stained with the blood of criminals,
Those guilty of high crimes against the King. (Ps 51:4)
They received the justice their actions deserved. (Luke 23:41)
But not today, here is One who is innocent. (Is 53:9; Luke 23:3,4; Matt. 27:23)
He spoke and worlds leapt into existence, (Heb. 11:3; Gen. 1:14-17)
Yet He washed clean dirt off the feet of dirty men. (John 13:1-10)
He created the wood He carries, (Col. 1:16)
And gives breath to His mockers. (Dan 5:23d)
This Man's crime
Was that He claimed to be the "King of the Jews". (John 19:19-22)
He healed the sick on their Sabbaths. (Luke 6:6-11; Luke 14:1-6; Mark 2:25-27)
He made the lame to run,
The blind to see,
The deaf to hear, (Is. 35:5,6; Mark 7:37)
And to the poor He preached the gospel. (Is. 61:1)(Matt. 11:5)
A friend betrayed him, (Luke 22:47,48)
His own forsook Him— (Matt 26:56b;John 16:32;John 17:6,12)
In His greatest trial—denied. (Luke 22:54-61)
His brethren beat him, (Luke 22:63,64)
They spat upon Him,
And for speaking the truth they condemned Him. (John 8:45,46; Mark 14:55-65; John 18:
22,23)
What justice is found here?!
That innocent blood should be spent,
On a cross reserved for criminals of the King. (John 19:5,6)
Who will speak in His defense?!
Who will save Him from this seemingly grave injustice?! (Is. 53:1,4b)
We are ready, more than twelve legions strong ,
If He should but pray to His Father. (Matt. 26:53)
None shall intervene. (John 19:10,11)
For from before the earth's foundations were laid, (1 Peter 1:20,21) [Heb 9:26]
The plan was set in motion,
That God the Father would have a people for His own possession. (Eph. 1:4,5)
The Son loving the Father,
Was willing to be sent. [Heb. 10:5-7(Ps. 40:7,8); John 6:38]
The Father sent the Son, at the proper time,
That He might be both just and the justifier of the guilty—in Him. (Rom. 3:25,26)
To the self-righteous, (John 8:39,41; John 9:27-29,34; Luke 18:9-12)
Who knew who He was, (Matt. 22:41-46; John 7:25,26; 45,46; Mark 12:6-12)
He spoke condemnation; (Matt. 23:13-33; John 8:44)
But to those burdened with sin and guilt, (Matt. 11:28)
He spoke peace, (Luke 7:37,38,48,50)
And brought healing to weary souls. (John 9:35-38; Matt. 9:12,13)
They give Him gall to sedate the pain, (Matt. 27:34)
But tasting He refuses. (Mark 15:23)
Justice cries, "He must feel the shame and pain!" (Mark 15:16-20)
All the stripes, cuts and bruises. (Is. 53:5)
They nail His hands to the beam,
His feet to the post secure. (Mark 15:25)
Oh why were nails even used?,
When His love would have held Him there. (Rom 5:8; 1John 4:10)
Hanging on the cross—
Naked, Exhausted, His strength dried up.
Bruised and bleeding,
Joints ripping apart,
Nerves burning as if on fire,
Heart melting—yet He prays— (Ps. 22:14-17; Is. 53:4,5)
"Father, let them be, for they know not what they do." (Luke 23:34)
Oh! The irony,
The soldiers divide His garments,
Concerned for what will perish, (John19:23,24)
While truth is sacrificed, (John18:37,38)
That the thoughts of their hearts may be revealed. (Luke2:35;Mark15:39;John19:34,35;)
He cares for those nearest to Him
The thief, (Luke 23: 42,43)
His mother, Mary; (John 19:26,27)
But none will care for Him, as now, at the sixth hour— (Matt. 26:31; Mark 15:33)
His Father makes Him an offering for sin. (Is. 53:10; 1Cor. 5:21)
The land is dark for three hours straight, (Mark 15:33)
As the Father cuts off His love,
And gives in its place—wrath—
Unmixed with mercy.
Every jot and tittle of justice, (Matt. 5:17,18)
Against His people's rebellion, (Is. 53:6,8)
Comes crashing down,
And crushes His life. (Is. 53:10a)

"My God, My God, Why have You forsaken Me?!!" (Matt. 27:46)
Rings through time and space, (Ps. 22:1)
As the Son's humanity now knows
What it's like to be forsaken (Ps. 22:15b)
Without even common grace.
The command is given,
"I thirst," (John 19:28)
And though considered a criminal,
A sponge of vinegar is promptly brought, (Matt. 27:48)
That the scriptures might be fulfilled. (Ps. 69:21)
"It is finished." (John 19:30)
The world quakes, (Matt. 27:51)
As though crying for the One who made it. (Rom. 8:22)
Rocks are split because there is nothing left to praise, (Luke 19:37-40; Matt. 27:51)
For the object of their adoration is now silent before the grave.
The reason He came is punctuated,
As the veil is torn in two, (Mark 15:38)
And entrance into the Holy of holies,
Awaits for those who know,
That the Son of God is true. (Matt. 27:54)
In the end He cries aloud,
And to the Father commends His Spirit. (Luke 23:46)
Bows His head knowing He'll answer, (John 19:30; Ps. 22:21,22; Is. 53:11)
For He has kept His Father's command. (John 17:4,6-8)
The people
Beat their breasts and leave.(Luke 23:49)
